March 2015, Nicosia – The European Mediterranean Art Association (EMAA) and the Rooftop Theatre Group are pleased to announce that the Open Call for the residency curated by the young curators Basak Senova & Alenka Gregorič, under their proposed concept title ‘Stepping Over the Borders – What makes a division rigid? What makes a violation reflexive?, has been concluded.

EMAA and Rooftop thank the eleven Cypriot artists who have responded to the call with their very interesting project proposals. Based on the projects suggested, the curator invites the four Cypriot artists, Christina Georgiou, Nurtane Karagil, Abdullah Denizhan and Marinos Houtris, to participate in this residency. All artists have accepted the invite, thus the residency group which is coming together in Nicosia, finally consists of eight artists:
Tuhkanen Timo, Benji Boyadgian, Nika Autor, Ovidiu Anton, Christina Georgiou, Nurtane Karagil, Abdullah Denizhan and Marinos Houtris

The final exhibition will take place on Friday the 20th at the end of the residency and will also be moved to the CVAR Centre for Visual Arts and Research in the old city of Nicosia later on.

Similar Open Calls for residency programs for Young Artists for late 2015 and early 2016 will be announced on our website.

All residencies are carried out within the framework of the EU funded project “Confrontation Through Art: Contemporary Art as an Instrument for Reconciliation in Cyprus”, 2014-2017.

EMAA and Rooftop present the artistic outcome of this first residency in the ‘Stimulating Synapse’ exhibition, with the works of the participating artists Carl Michael von Hausswolff (Sweden), Ana Elizabet (Croatia), Paul Devens (Netherlands), Erhan Oze (Cypriot) and Eleni Phyla (Cypriot), who have all also agreed to donate these works of art to EMAA,  giving a further chance to this exhibition to be hosted in other cities of the island..

As the Croatian curator Branko Franceschi says:
“The group of European and Cypriot artists at the end created an ambience, consisting of long term projects, project proposals, web platform, interactive, participatory art works and sound installations that reflect present division and hopes with vigor, vision and humor.”
